The festival "Russian Wave" is the biggest Russian sports event held abroad. It’s organized by the legendary Russian surfer Seva Shulgin and sponsored by famous politic Boris Nemtsov who actively participates in promoting windsurfing in Russia. The festival started on the 24th of February in Hurghada and gathered today’s best windsurfers and kitesurfers.
More than 150 sportsmen came to fight for the prize: in 2008 the prize money was almost doubled compare to last year and equalled $23,000.
This time, apart from the traditional Russian Wave Freestyle Cup, the organizers decided to hold another competition – slalom, and also added kitesurfing and wakeboarding competitions. The essence of freestyle is to make as many as possible overcomplicated movements while jumping and turning; slalom is a spectacular speed race.
The competitions were held in dynamic atmosphere, with frequently changing wind, but, as all the judges agreed, the surfers really managed to demonstrate their skill. Very young sportsmen took part in the competition too: Konstantin Smirnov (9 years old), 10th place in the slalom competition, and Artem Murashov (13 years old), 7th place in the same contest. Note that there were only 11 sportsmen taking part in the race.
Over 800 guests came to the festival, including Boris Nemtsov, Alexander Lyubimov, Head of Russky Dom Nedvizhimosti Alexey Preobrazhensky, President of Norilsk-Telecom Sergey Kuznetsov, Sergey Polonsky, Alezander Kosyanenko and pop music stars – Dynamite, HulaHoop and others.
5 days of active competitions flew quickly. The official closing ceremony was held on February 29. All the winners got valuable prizes. The happy winners who got money prizes and gift certificates from Rip Curl will long remember the beckoning sound of waves and the long-awaited delight of victory.
